Abstract
Historical areas are considered one of the urban heritage components due to their historical, cultural, and civilizational value, which connects the current society to its historical roots. And considering that existing cities are dynamic entities that are growing urbanely and demographically, This continuous growth has had an impact on those historical areas located within them, and some of these areas are suffering from various problems which are the deterioration of their urban fabric, and the failure to align their ancient entities with the current and future requirements of the city. This results in an increase in the pressure on the urban centers within which they are located, causing these centers to lose their primary service function.
This research paper aims to identify the requirements for preserving historical areas to achieve their sustainable integration, in order to provide guidance to the relevant planning authorities when implementing preservation projects. Therefore, the research included a theoretical study to define historical areas, as well as the concept and dimensions of the aimed sustainable integration. It also examined and analyzed some previous case studies to establish an initial list of the requirements for achieving the sustainable integration which the research aimed for. then analyzed the results of an expert survey conducted by the researcher to determine the primary impact degree of each requirement related to different dimensions of development. According to these findings, the research identifies the most important requirements that contribute to achieving the targeted sustainable integration in historical areas, based on their priorities.
